  1. They are the ultimate tree dwellers – Orangutans spend about 90% of their lives in trees, making them the reigning champions of jungle gymnastics. They use their long arms that can stretch up to 7 feet to swing effortlessly through the forest. They are nature’s original parkour athletes. 
  2. They are ridiculously smart – Orangutans have been known to use tools, learn sign language, and even make umbrellas out of leaves. That’s right, while we’re struggling to remember where we left our car keys, orangutans are out here crafting natural raincoats.

  6. They make comfy jungle beds – Every night, orangutans build fresh nests out of leaves and branches to ensure they get the best night’s sleep. 
  7. They’re fruit fanatics – Orangutans love fruit, but you’ll never guess what their favourite one is... the durian! This is a fruit that’s so smelly it’s been banned from public transportation in some countries. But orangutans don’t mind; they chow down on it like its gourmet cuisine. 

Why Should We Care About Orangutans?

  • Deforestation – Rainforests in Borneo and Sumatra, which are the only places orangutans live, are being destroyed at an alarming rate. This is done mainly to get timber and to establish palm oil plantations. 
  • Illegal pet trade – Baby orangutans are often captured and sold as pets. This is a cruel and heartbreaking practice that harms both the infants and their mothers. 
  • Climate change – Rising temperatures and habitat loss are making survival even tougher for these already struggling primates.
